The Necklace

In “The Necklace,” Mathilde Loisel, a discontented wife, borrows a diamond necklace from a wealthy friend to attend a prestigious ball. After losing the necklace, she and her husband rack up a huge debt to replace it with a similar-looking one. A Parisian woman’s desire for wealth leads to a devastating twist, a classic of irony and moral lesson.

The first of six stories chosen to highlight a wide range of cultures, faith perspectives, and literary genres—from English and French classics to Native American, Muslim, African, and Latinx voices—each offering a unique lens on truth, tradition, and human experience.

Our faith is strengthened when we can use fiction to open our hearts and minds to those outside our normal sphere of experience. Come discuss with us.
