Stories shape how we see the world and strengthen faith. Join our monthly group as we discuss short stories that spark imagination and encourage dialogue.

Why Fiction Matters

We are shaped by everything we read. Should we only read facts?
Fiction has the power to broaden our understanding of people, places, and situations.

  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin opened hearts to the horrors of slavery.
  • 1984 sharpened our awareness of truth and power.
  • C. S. Lewis’ stories stir imagination and faith.

As Leland Ryken of Wheaton College reminds us:
“Fiction tells the truth in ways nonfiction never could, even as it delights your aesthetic sensibilities in the process.”

Faith and Story in Scripture

The Bible itself relies on story.
Narratives, parables, and poetry help us grasp God’s revelation in deeper ways. Fiction can do something similar, training us to imagine, empathize, and believe more fully.

At the Lanier Theological Library, we believe that reading stories with faith in mind deepens our spiritual lives and sharpens our understanding of the world.
