The Signalman
In Charles Dickens’s “The Signal-Man,” a railway signalman becomes terrified after a ghostly apparition appears before him multiple times, seemingly warning him of impending accidents. He believes the ghost has predicted two previous tragedies but is tormented because he can’t decipher the warning about a third, which he fears is meant for him. A visiting narrator initially tries to rationalize the signalman’s visions, but the story ends tragically.
