Apologetics to the “Spiritual But Not Religious”

In this lecture, Dr. Michael Horton explores one of the most significant and often overlooked mission fields of our time: the “Spiritual But Not Religious” (SBNR). While much of contemporary apologetics has focused on responding to atheism, the SBNR worldview is far more pervasive — even among many who identify as atheists. As younger generations grow increasingly distant from Christianity, how do we engage them meaningfully? Dr. Horton makes a compelling case for the resurrection apologetic as a uniquely powerful bridge to this growing segment of the population.
Dr. Michael Horton has served as Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary California since 1998 and is ordained in the United Reformed Churches in North America. He earned his PhD from Wycliffe Hall, Oxford/University of Coventry and held a research fellowship at Yale Divinity School. As founder of Sola Media, he created the White Horse Inn podcast, Modern Reformation magazine, and Core Christianity. A prolific scholar, Dr. Horton has authored or edited over forty books and contributed to major reference works including the Oxford Handbook of Reformed Theology and Brill’s Encyclopedia of Christianity. His latest book, Magician and Mechanic (Eerdmans, 2026), is volume two of a three-volume intellectual history of the “Spiritual But Not Religious” movement — making him uniquely positioned to address this topic.
