The Fifth Annual John Warwick Montgomery Lecture in Evidential Apologetics
“Old Testament Ethical Challenges, the Image of God, and Its Contemporary Relevance”
Approaching certain biblical texts—especially Old Testament passages on warfare and servitude–may create challenges or tensions or even seem to be in conflict with the doctrine of the imago Dei. Yet upon closer scrutiny, that core Scriptural affirmation of human dignity is not thereby lessened or undermined. This doctrine also has important relevance for our modern world. Although foundational to Western civilization’s convictions about inalienable human dignity, equality before the law, and other democratizing values, this biblical emphasis on dignity is being relativized, downgraded, and/or undermined altogether. Gospel-oriented Christians are called to speak with a prophetic voice and to undertake bold, practical initiatives to reaffirm and preserve these convictions.
