Becoming Like Jesus with Cor Bennema
David Capes talks with New Testament scholar Cornelius Bennema about his book Imitation in Early Christianity: Mimesis and Religious Ethical Formation. Bennema describes imitation as a creative, intentional process of choosing an example, discerning what is worth following, and applying it thoughtfully—not simply copying someone’s actions. We explore how following Jesus can foster imitation, and how the Gospels present ethical examples through Jesus’s teachings and actions. The conversation also traces imitation’s roots in Greco-Roman culture and its role in Christian moral formation.
